Major Mandella, 2458-3142 A.D., Chapter 3 Summary
Shortly after the journey begins aboard the Masaryk II, Mandella and Moore meet in the officer's lounge and drink coffee, which they agree is the worst they have ever tasted. Hilleboe comes in and asks Mandella if he will be speaking to the company before it is time for the acceleration tanks. Barely avoiding telling her that it is his job to make those decisions, he assigns her to go over some routine items with the platoon leaders, which is a job that would usually have been done by one of her subordinates. She leaves the lounge, clearly irritated. Moore and Mandella have a brief discussion about how Hilleboe is going to cause problems and possibly undermine his authority, but Mandella has not yet determined how he is going to handle her.
