The Forests

Yona travels around the forests from the time Jerusza kidnaps her. There are a couple of specific names, but the descriptions remain very similar. Yona first meets Aleksander and the other Jewish refugees. The forests are large with villages at the edges. There are seldom people inside the forests other than those hiding and the soldiers looking for refugees. The main forest is so large that two other groups of refugees hide there without ever encountering Yona's group. Jerusza taught Yona to live mostly from what the forest provides, and Yona teaches the other refugees to do the same.

The Winter Dugouts

The group settles into three dugout shelters for their first winter together in the forest. This turns out to be a significant setting because Yona and Aleksander first begin a serious relationship during this time. Two of the dugouts are large but the one Yona...
