Summary
In Chapter 20, Yona does not see the nuns the next day, but Siegfried says he talked to Sister Maria. Yona cannot imagine that conversation. Siegfried and Yona talk about their lives and the past. Yona wonders if her kidnapping and her mother's death turned Siegfried into this cruel German officer, and if he would have been different without those events. Siegfried reveals an idea to take the nuns into the woods where soldiers will fire eight times to make people believe they shot the nuns. They will be sent away with orders to never return. Siegfried says he will do this if Yona agrees to go home to Berlin and if she tells him where the Jewish refugees led by Bielski are hiding. Yona says she does not know of this group or the Zorin group. She lies, naming an area she feels...
