Summary
In Chapter 8, Aleksander and Yona meet. She wonders if he realizes the change her life is undergoing, then Aleksander says he is worried he is asking too much of her. She assures him this is her choice. Aleksander asks questions. She pulls up the memories she has of her home in Berlin. She believes that Jerusza's efforts to make her forget her parents has frozen them in her brain instead. Yona tells Aleksander general information about her past, including Jerusza's death, then changes the subject. They catch fish, talking more about the Germans and Aleksander's fear that they will not survive in the forest. She suggests “God has led me here to help you” (84).
