Summary
Mr. Woodifield is visiting his friend's office on a Tuesday afternoon. He remarks that it is snug in the office, but is grateful to be there. Mr Woodifield has recently had a stroke, and ever since his wife and daughters do not permit him to leave the house. The only exception is Tuesday, which he spends in town. He admires his friend's office and notes that his friend, "the boss," is five years older than himself but "still going strong, still at the helm" (1). Inwardly, the boss is pleased that Woodifield is admiring the space. It makes him feel a sense of "deep, solid satisfaction" (1).
The boss responds that his office is quite comfortable, and explains to Woodifield the improvements he has made to the room recently, including new furniture and electric heating. The narrator notes that "he did not draw old Woodifield's attention...
