Summary
In “Harmonica, December 1990,” Jake sits on the rooftop of his trailer watching neighbor and friend Frank feed and play his harmonica for the feral cats. Jake spends a lot of time on his roof because he does not like being inside with his mother, Krystal, his stepfather, Bert, and his new baby sister. Jake thinks of his best friend, Misty, who lives near him in the trailer court. Later, in the week before Christmas, Jake brings Frank two new suits. The same night, Frank kills himself, and his body is discovered the next day. Jake and Frank are forbidden from seeing the body toted away by the paramedics. After his death, Jake feeds the cats for a while until Bert hits him in the lip for trespassing on Frank’s property. He hangs one of the rosary beads he found in a thrift...
