Chapter 16
Protesters show up early on Katherine Yellin’s lawn. They are upset with the leukemia patient’s story, and the fact that he died the next day. In fact, Amy shares, there were seven other cases of people across the nation with terminal illnesses giving up the fight to die. Literally, the new slant to the Coldwater miracle, Amy tells Katherine, is that heaven is killing people. Katherine is appalled. She begins to blame the others who came forward, thinking that maybe they are the real hoaxes. Tess Rafferty, Katherine says, quit going to church decades ago. Why would Heaven call someone like that? Katherine starts crying and Amy doesn’t know what to do. She sits at the kitchen table awkwardly and sips her tea.
