Summary
Chapter 1
In a small town in Michigan, various people receive phone calls from their long dead loved ones. In particular, there is a woman named Tess, who receives a call from her mother, and then Jack Sellers, a policeman, who receives a call from his son who’d been killed in action overseas. Pastor Warren doesn’t receive a call, but one of his parishioners, Katherine Yellin, does…from her long dead sister. All of the departed say the same thing: they are fine and are happy. Meanwhile, Sullivan Harding is released from prison, but his wife, Giselle, is not present to greet him. There is only his mother and father, and his small son, Jules.
