Detroit
Opal was born and raised in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. Opal and her half sister Pearl were raised by their mother, Ruby. They were well aware of the events of the Civil Rights Movement, which occurred during their youths. They even lived in Alabama for a summer and witnessed major events of the Civil Rights Movement firsthand. As they grew up in Detroit, Opal and Pearl developed a shared interest in singing. Pearl was the better singer, but Opal was the better performer. Also, Pearl’s main interests were Christianity and singing in the Church choir. Opal was eventually discovered by Howie and Nev while singing at a club in Detroit.
