Dealing with Faeries in Real Life
The author takes three ordinary children and has them meet a real faerie by the end of the book. The encounter with the boggart builds up slowly. At first the children hear strange noises in the walls. They attempt to make rational explanations for the noises and say that it is a squirrel or other small animal. Nevertheless, the evidence builds up that they are dealing with a creature that is intelligent and can act in human-like ways. This becomes apparent first to Jared, who is the most daring in trying to find out about the creatures. His sister Mallory also exhibits a degree of courage in smashing open the kitchen wall in order to discover the creature's nest.
