Importance: On a literal level, this statement is somewhat obvious and redundant, for it merely reiterates the fact that while Phoebe is the protagonist and narrator, Heist is the titular detective. However, this statement also has a somewhat ironic edge, for as the novel continues, Phoebe takes a more active role in the investigation, thereby asserting her own identity as a impromptu detective.

Importance: Heist makes this statement in reference to the homeless people living in the San Antonio Wash. The tide of the nearby creek is rising, and so the homeless residents of the Wash need help to relocate. Heist readily helps them move their belongings in his truck. This is one of the first instances in which Heist’s strongly altruistic nature is on display.
