Point of View
Wolitzer’s novel is written exclusively in the third person omniscient point of view. In this way, Wolitzer enables us to develop deep connections with each of her characters without having them speak directly for themselves.
Through this perspective, we see the development of Faith’s character, from the idolized feminist, as she is portrayed at the chapel at Ryland College, to the corporate figurehead that she embodies later on at Loci. With this point of view, we are able to develop insight into Faith’s character that neither Greer, Zee nor even Emmett have the privilege of knowing. We are able to explore the incidents that shaped her values in a way that none of her acquaintances have been able to, and we are given knowledge that they are not.
