Summary

In Chapter 10, watching the gardener work and eat, Eszter thought of leaving the hospital a few days prior. The gardener’s meal reminded her of the food Gizi brought her after she left the hospital. She had waited at the restaurant one day for the lover. When he failed to show up, she left him a message saying she would not see him again.

At home, Eszter sat in the dark imagining various scenarios involving the lover and Angéla. She saw herself with Angéla, returned to the “little orphan girl who was now lamenting . . . that she had no father or mother” (180). The lover appeared, looking for Eszter. Eszter was wearing a costume. When she returned to her “real self,” Angéla cried on the lover’s shoulder (181). Eszter realized Angéla loved her.
