Summary
In Chapter 1, Eszter met with her doctor Gyurica about her swollen foot. He recommended she “avoid walking on it” (11). Eszter’s childhood friend Gizi was there. The night before, Eszter had run into Gizi, realizing she wanted to spend the night together. She had called Gyurica when she saw Eszter’s foot in the morning.
On her way home, Eszter thought about her father. She approached the chapel, but “didn’t go in” (14). Her feet hurt from wearing Gizi’s shoes. Watching a man by “the statue of St. Antony,” Eszter started to cry but was unsure why. (14). She did not believe in God and felt hopeless.
Eszter continued walking, her feet still hurting. She realized how much her lover would have “loved [her] father” (16). She “never talked about him much” with the lover (16). Most of what she told him was a lie...
