Jane Reyes

Jane Reyes is the 24-year-old protagonist of the novel, a single mother who is determined to provide for her daughter's future and finds herself as a surrogate. When the novel begins, Jane has just left her boyfriend Billy even though their daughter Amalia is only four-weeks-old at the time. They are both living in the dormitory in Queens with the other Filipino women, and Jane struggles to raise her daughter while sleeping in a bunk bed. The choice to move away from Billy highlights the most important element of Jane's character: her strong maternal instinct. Though she herself would endure an abusive relationship, Jane will not allow Amalia to suffer through the same, even if it means struggling financially for some time.
