Summary
In the short section entitled "The Walls," Markham writes about the US-Mexico border and the various walls and fences along it. One opening in the barriers where many migrants cross is along the edge of the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. After crossing the Rio Grande and the physical border wall, there are many customs checkpoints including a well-known one in Falfurrias. To avoid this checkpoint, migrants must walk through the desert, where they often lose their lives. Bodies are often found by ranchers are interred in a local graveyard, often in mass graves. As their identities are unknown, they have no personal grave markers like the headstones on the nearby graves of documented people.
