Annie Fang
Annie is one of the novel’s four central characters. She was born in the year 1977 and is the daughter of Caleb and Camille Fang. When Camille was first pregnant with Annie, Camille and Caleb worried that parenting would distract from their artistic work. However, they soon had the idea to make disruptive, public performance art that would incorporate Annie. Thus, throughout Annie’s childhood, Caleb and Camille forced Annie and her brother Buster to participate in these performance art pieces. Annie sometimes enjoyed participating, but she often found the pieces to be cruel and unfair, especially when they involved lies or manipulation perpetrated by Caleb and Camille.
