Family

The Family Chao focuses on how families can fall apart and what things could bring them back together. All three of the brothers despise their father in different ways which lead to conflict between themselves. In the end, however, they are able to find some common ground in their family traditions, even if their relationship is weakened by suffering.

At first, the idea of a family unit within the confines of the novel is caught somewhere between loving each other or abandoning everyone for good. Winnie, for example, begs Dagou to forgive Leo and worries that her sons will not be able to love the world if they cannot love their father.
