Haven
Haven, Wisconsin is the main setting of the novel where everything takes place with a few exceptions for Ming who visits New York occasionally. It is a small town containing mostly White and Asian Americans. However, the two communities are distant from each other and there are many racial undertones, especially toward the Asian characters. However, some like Ming see Haven as a dead-end and long to escape it. Dagou, in comparison, sees Haven for the stability it can provide. Ultimately, all of the Chao family stay in Haven for a prolonged period of time after Dagou's murder trial hoping to keep the restaurant open for his sake.
