William "Dagou" Chao
William Chao (also called Dagou by most everyone in the novel) is the oldest Chao brother who planned to take over the family restaurant. Since he was the firstborn, Dagou was expected to be the savior of the family, but Leo sees him as a disappointment. He once left for New York to be a musician, but came back to Haven to help Leo when Winnie fell ill. After six years of perfecting his cooking, Dagou decides to take Leo up on his offer to inherit the restaurant so that he can settle in Haven. However, Leo refuses to pass it and constantly taunts Dagou just like he did when Dagou was a child. Ultimately, Dagou is charged with killing Leo due to circumstantial evidence, even though Dagou says that he did not go through with it. He plans to appeal and stands by his innocence...
