Summary

Book 5 begins with the time marker “1947-1948” (275) and opens in the fall of 1947 with Saul leading a secret double life working for both his father-in-law Joey Colicchio and the Jewish mob boss Elie Leibovich. Once a week, Saul gives Eli information concerning Tommy Fianzo, who controls the docks that Eli wants to take over.

Joey asks Saul to a meeting. Saul assumes that Joey has discovered his betrayal, working for Eli, but instead Joey offers him a promotion. At first, Saul refuses, saying he does not want to be a part of another war. But when Joey explains the history of the mafia and its purpose, touching empathetically upon Saul’s lost heritage and dead mother, Saul is overwhelmed with gratitude for Joey’s generosity, and knows he will accept the job.
