Luzia Cotado
Luzia Cotado is one of the main characters that the narrator focuses on the most alongside Valentina. Born to Jewish parents, Luzia works as a scullion to hide her heritage, while pretending to be less educated than she actually is. In reality, Luzia can speak, read, and understand multiple languages and has no issue with outwitting opponents, especially when they underestimate her. This also applies to her magic which she can perform using refranes that her aunt taught her when she was younger. Throughout the novel, Luzia learns how to form the words in her mind, which lets her use her magic while pretending that it is a miracle from God. This power is what allows her to save herself and Santángel from their execution while tricking everyone into believing they are dead at the end of the novel.
