Summary
In Chapter 33, Santángel tells Luzia that he has been bound to the De Paredes family for many generations, and she says she does not want him to leave. As Luzia takes a bath, Santángel tells his story: as a child, he was extremely lucky and could do whatever he wanted. Eventually, he befriended a boy named Tello who helped Santángel when his father died. However, Santángel became obsessed with avoiding death, and accepted a ritual that would give him eternal life in exchange for what he valued the least. It was not until much later that he discovered the truth: Tello tricked him into exchanging Santángel’s luck for Tello’s eternal life. However, if Santángel tries to leave, he turns to ash by morning. None of Tello’s ancestors have ever freed him from their service...
