Chapter 16

It is morning at the Time Tombs, and Kassad has not returned. Father Hoyt's body has been transformed into that of Father Paul Duré, who awakens and identifies himself.

Lamia and Silenus decide to make a trip back to Keep Chronos for provisions.

Chapter 17

Atop the tower, Kassad found Moneta, the mysterious woman he had met in battle simulations years before and who first brought him to Hyperion and the Shrike. He attacks her but his weapons fail him, as she is much stronger. They make love. He asks if she is the Shrike or a follower of the Shrike. She tells him that she is the Shrike's consort and nemesis; its keeper. She was brought backward in time to watch over the Shrike. The Shrike appears and creates a portal that looks much like a Farcaster portal. Moneta...
