Leashes

Leashes are symbols that a dog is a pet. It is also a symbol that the dog lacks the freedom that Johannes holds so dear. Johannes is terrified when he is trapped by a leash for a short time.

The Coda

This is the name given to the final flight of an injured or sick gull. It is a symbol of impending death, and of the bird's determination to retain control as long as possible. Johannes disapproves of the practice.

The Paintings

The paintings are symbols of life outside the confines of the park and the island. Johannes is fascinated with the paintings from the first time he sees them, but it takes several conversations with Helene to understand that he is fascinated with the idea of a life outside the park.
