Summary

In Chapter 37, Helene understands why Johannes needs to find Bertrand. Everyone is much more relaxed about hiding Johannes instead of the three large Bison. Johannes encounters Angus who says Bertrand has gone for his coda flight. Johannes calls out. Yolanda says Johannes cannot stop this tradition. As Bertrand plunges toward the sea, Johannes shouts “Stop,” then “Please,” then “There is more” (242).

In Chapter 38, Bertrand soars up just before he hits water. Johannes urges Bertrand to go with him. Bertrand says it is a matter of honor to die. Johannes argues that Bertrand has merely changed from flying to walking. Johannes pledges to carry Bertrand when the need arises.
