Summary

In Chapter 5, Johannes arrives at the Bison pen. He tells them about the new building and the “rectangles full of gorgeous commotion,” but does not mention that he was touched. Johannes has trouble explaining the paintings so that Freya understands. Freya can tell Johannes is very interested in the paintings. She reminds him of the way deer are mesmerized by car lights. While other animals rush to get out of the way, deer are so captivated that they are often killed by the cars. Freya says everyone has weaknesses. Samuel says he does not, but Freya ignores him. Johannes has heard there were once many Bison, but men killed them – all but these three. Johannes promises to be careful. He returns to his hollow tree to sleep.
