Summary

The novel is written in first person from the limited perspective of Johannes. He introduces himself as a dog who lives free in a park. He prides himself on his ability to run so fast that people never really see him. In the park, he is “the Eyes.” His job is to see and report the happenings in the park. Other animals can confirm his role, but he advises the reader not to ask the ducks because “The ducks know nothing” (12). Johannes runs very fast, “like a rocket.” People never see him. Johannes says he was born in this park. His mother was a pet. He has no idea why she decided to give birth in the park.
