Summary
Part 6, Chapter 1, or “Mathinna: Government House, Hobart Town, 1841,” Mathinna met Hazel in the kitchen. Hazel asked Mathinna about her parents and where she was from. Mathinna recognized that Hazel was the first in Government House to talk to her “like a real person” and offered to help her with her work (256). When the Franklins decided to hold a springtime party, Lady Franklin insisted that Mathinna replace her classes with dance lessons. She learned quickly and enjoyed practicing the dance steps. The household even applauded her efforts. Hazel helped fit Mathinna into the red dress that she was beginning to outgrow. They each shared with one another about their sentimental necklaces.
