Summary
The Medea reached Hobart Town after a four-month voyage in Part 5, Chapter 2, or “Hazel: Hobart Town, 1840.” Dunne told Hazel that he had named her Ruby’s mother on her birth certificate, giving her the right to visit her in the nursery. Hours later, the ship reached the shore, and each convict was “catalogued, examined for infection, and quizzed about their skills” over two days (213). Upon Hazel’s inspection, Dunne recommended her to an assignment in the nursery. While they waited on the deck to be boarded onto smaller boats, Olive anticipated Ruby’s feeding. Dunne brought Hazel her things, including his copy of The Tempest. Looking back at the ship, Hazel noticed that Buck was also being led to shore as a prisoner.
