Summary
The days became unbearably hot as they reached the equator in Part 3, Chapter 6, or “Evangeline: Medea, 1840.” After two and a half months, they reached the Cape of Good Hope as the first convict died. While Evangeline washed laundry one day, she heard Hazel’s cries. She found Hazel with her skirt hoisted, overtaken by Buck choking her with her ticket cord. Evangeline threatened him with a pole before Buck knocked her down. Hazel pushed a barrel at him while Evangeline grabbed the knife he dropped. Evangeline swung the knife as he reached for it, slicing his forearm. She seethed with rage, and Buck was punished for the attack. Buck was punished further for Hazel’s accusation that he, not she, had stolen that knife. Evangeline thought about her potential future after serving her sentence.
