Summary
In Part 3, Chapter 2, or “Evangeline: Medea, The Port of London, 1840,” Evangeline fell into her routine on the ship. Soon, four more women were brought to Medea. The last was a young, stoic redhead. Buck, a sailor rumored to have been a murderer, responded to the girl’s despondency toward his sexual harassment by shoving her. The girl introduced herself to Dr. Dunne as Hazel Ferguson. Olive, angered by Buck’s previous attack on her, told Dr. Dunne what happened. When Hazel took her bunk across from Olive and Evangeline, the latter women introduced themselves. Olive coaxed Hazel to tell them she was only 16 years old. Once the ship was full, the Quakers visited. Gifting her a bible, one Quaker asked Evangeline to teach other women how to read.
