Romance
The theme of romance is at the heart of The Ex Hex. Rhys and Vivi’s relationship starts when they are college students and resumes eight years later. Although they do their best to deny their feelings at first, they eventually succumb to them, getting back together.
For Vivi’s part, Rhys transforms the way she behaves. For instance, making out with a man in the library is wholly uncharacteristic of her. The narrator explains, “[Vivi] was normally a completely rational and calm person, and Rhys Penhallow made her totally lose her mind” (96). Rhys’ spontaneity contrasts with Vivi’s practicality, making for an interesting dynamic within their relationship. Although Rhys sometimes makes Vivi confuse her priorities, ultimately, he is a positive influence on her. He enables her to forget her anxieties and live in the moment.
