Escape
The escapism demonstrated by the characters within the novel shows the boundaries of what each person may withstand in the face of a changing society that has been overtaken by technology and the subsequently distracting demands on their time. Through exploring what boundless capitalism and technological adoption does to the way people relate to each other, Dave Eggers subtly expresses the hope that each generation experiences less alienation and dependence, but that it is up to individuals to stand up for their rights to privacy and genuine connection. Delaney believes that the incessant connection advocated for by the Every contributes to driving people further apart and has made it her mission to change the culture by stirring up negative feelings toward the company.
