Summary

Chapter 34 is dated October 1002. Aldred's situation is greatly improved. He has built a library with books in English rather than just Latin. His scriptorium produces books for sale and children attend school at the monastery. Rent collections and gifts have increased. Edgar spent two months searching for Ragna and her children. Ethelred refuses to get heavily involved because he never approved her marriage to Wilf. Wigelm claims Ragna went home to Cherbourg, but messengers from Cherbourg deny that.

Ragna and her maid Cat, along with Ragna's three sons and Cat's two daughters, were bound and taken to Wilf's hunting lodge. Ragna realizes Agnes is a traitor. Wigelm arrives one day. When Ragna again refuses his offer of marriage, he rapes her.
