Summary

Chapter 31 opens in June 1002. Ragna sees the ruined bridge as she rides into town with Wilf, Agnes, Bern, and six bodyguards. Wilf's condition has not improved. Ragna tends his needs, and Wilf spends nights with Carwen. Ragna meets Aldred, Den, and a bishop named Modulf at the monastery. She suggests Wilf go to the stables, and he complies. She explains Wilf's condition – including memory loss and the inability to make decisions – to Aldred, Den, and Modulf. She fears someone will kill Wilf to take over his role as ealdorman. She hopes a will that names his son Osbert as his successor with Ragna making decisions until Osbert comes of age will eliminate that possibility. The men agree. Ragna visits Edgar at his home. He is proud of the book she gave him as a gift. Though he should not be, he is glad...
