Summary
Much like the beginning of every new section, we are presented once again with the passing season and the narrator’s overview of the different characters. World’s End sinks into the earth with the death of its resident and rumors of the serpent are still present. Naomi is still missing, and in Pentonville Road Luke’s hand heals but slowly. Martha writes to Spencer saying that Edward Burton and his mother are to lose their home because of the rent and Charles has nothing to show for the promises that he made. In the Ambrose household the children are well fed and Charles contemplates crushing Joanna’s spirit by telling her the unlikelihood of the future that she wants. She wants parliament and the law but during this time, those are positions only held by men. Cora remains in the London hotel...
