The translator has provided a debriefing that Rumi wrote for the benefit of the readers. He uses candles as an important symbol for how they function relative to the Sun. While it is true that in the night they are very helpful, in the bright light of day, their glow is greatly diminished. However, elsewhere in the book, Rumi has also noted that despite this change in the perceived radiance, if you put the cotton wool near to the candle, it will still be ignited.
