Chapter 11 Summary
As the Baudelaires go through the hallway, they realize it is really an underground tunnel. They are able to pinpoint their location by listening to the traffic and voices coming from above. Soon, however, they hit a dead end. Klaus begins to bang on the ceiling of the tunnel and ashes fall down on the children. Thinking they are below a barbecue pit, the children continue to use their fire tongs to break through the ceiling. Succeeding, they climb out, allowing time for their eyes to adjust to the light. They realize they are in a familiar location. There is a man staring at them, who says they must be ghosts. The children ask for directions to Veblen Hall and he stutters as he gives them. The man mentions that people had said the site of the old Baudelaire mansion was haunted and...
