Point of View
The point of view in the novel is in first person, as Bahar narrates the entirety of the novel. However, Bahar is an unconventional first person narrator as she is also an omniscient narrator. This omniscience comes from Bahar’s role as a ghost, as she explains, “the most important advantage of death is knowing something when I want to know it” (52). Bahar is able to narrate everything that occurs after her death, which begins with her family’s move to Razan and ends with her parents’ deaths. Just as Bahar points out that Turan “was unaware of many details” (11) during her aunt’s recount of a particular story, Bahar often adds details and descriptions to events within the novel that only she knows as a result of her omniscience.
