Bahar
Bahar is both the main character and narrator in the novel. She is the child of Roza and Hushang, and the youngest of her siblings. Though she is the youngest in her family, Bahar is also the first to die, as she is burnt to death in a house fire set off by revolutionaries at only the age of 13. Thus, for the entirety of the novel, Bahar is nothing more than a ghost. As a ghost, Bahar makes an effective narrator, as she has the power to see and know everything at any given time, including the thoughts of the novel’s characters. However, because Bahar is a ghost and the narrator, most of the novel does not focus on the details of her character.
