Summary

Chapter 1 opens roughly in the present day. Dana Goss is a woman in her late sixties. Dana grew up in a large house, known as Edgeweather, in the fictional town of Wells, Connecticut. She is from a wealthy family and has lived alone for years, except for the presence of the Mexican family that her family has employed for decades. Dana is curmudgeonly in nature and is often annoyed with the employees. The employees’ family name is Lopez. Dana prepares to leave the house for an extended period of time.

Chapter 2 shifts focus to Jackie, a woman who is about the same age as Dana. Jackie awakes in her own house and recalls fragmentary memories of her past. She thinks especially about her son Rick, who is now an adult. She also thinks about Floyd, who is her husband and Rick’s father. Jackie...
