Summary
Chapter 23 is set during the time that Henry was working with Jürgen at Fort Detrick. Jürgen sent Henry to Lambaréné in West Africa to try to find out why some people were naturally immune to Ebola. On the last day of Henry’s visit, Dr. Fanny Méyé and Henry discussed Albert Schweitzer’s definition of ethics. Henry said he believed that he and Jürgen shared an admiration for Schweitzer and his ideas. Méyé, however, suggested that Jürgen was among the people who took Schweitzer’s ideals too far and forgot that “humans are animals as well, and also deserving of reverence” (174). Méyé admitted she thought that Jürgen was frightening.
