Summary

Liz was 27 at the time she became engaged to Robert Schwan, a jazz musician. At the party, Jules found himself being self-conscious of his inability to be as charming and engaging as he once was. There, he bonded with Marty and his new girlfriend Elena. Four months after the engagement, Jules received a phone call that Liz had a nervous breakdown. He traveled from Hamburg to Munich, finding that Robert had left Liz months ago and that she had terminated a pregnancy as a result, finding herself hysterical and almost naked in the street afterward. In the summer of 1998, the three siblings went to Berdillac along with Elena. Marty had inherited the house and also renovated it. While there, the siblings found it difficult to connect, with Marty confronting Jules over his abandoning his law studies and taking up a fruitless photography...
