Summary

The memories then jump to December 1983, three years after the last chapter and to the final Christmas Jules had with his family, including his Aunt Helene. He remembered how the family only allowed him into the living room once the tree had been decorated. His father came to see him, telling him he was to receive a special present later. Jules recalled the rapid change in his father after he lost his job. He began to lose his hair, became withdrawn and overbearing, and would wander for hours with his camera but never showing anyone his pictures. The only time he was himself was when playing football.
