Summary

Laureline and Valerian see marcyam hunters emerge from nearby trees. The hunters welcome Valerian and Laureline into their camp. One of the hunters explains that his group is going to the capital city for “the festival of the empire's ambassadors” where they expect to sell marcyam skins. Within days, they begin the trip and arrive back in Syrte. Valerian and Laureline stand on a boat as they approach the walls of the city.

Once on land, Valerian says he want to know who is running the kingdom – the prince or the Enlighteneds. They go to the market and buy new clothes and jewelry from a merchant later identified as Elmir. Laureline is thrilled with her appearance. Valerian says they will blend in with dignitaries in town for the festival, and he hopes to gain admittance to the capital building in that manner. He...
