America Singer
America is the narrative's main character. She is one of the Elite, but is different from the others in that she comes from a lower caste. Even though she is now a three, the fact that she grew up as a five is a point that she does not forget and often references in the narrative. Her original position in the caste system is one of the factors that keeps her from agreeing to be Maxon's wife. She does not think she is worthy of the job, so she constantly pulls away. In his letter to her, her father points out her insecurities and gives her encouragement and support with the hopes that she will grow and overcome them.
