It is both a literal and esoteric search; they are using modern advances in science to attempt to answer perhaps the oldest question of humanity, the question "why are we here." In the search for the theory of everything, physicists study both the very large and very small. These worlds are nowhere near as familiar as the world we live in. In fact, they can be bizarre and completely contradictory to what we find "normal."
