Alabama – Dixie’s Home Inside 1966-1969
The majority of the novel takes place in Dixie’s hometown in rural Alabama, inside her home. Everhart never specifies the town; simply sharing that they live in Perry County. Dixie is a fifth generation Dupree and most of her family has lived in the area, on the exact same stretch of road. Daddy bought the house, and though it is simple Mama keeps it extremely clean. The house is where Uncle Ray abuses Dixie: in her bedroom and in the bathroom. The house is where Mama first slaps Dixie across the face, marking the first time Dixie lies for Mama. The house is also where Mama and Daddy have their fights; Mama learns of Daddy’s accident; and the entire family meets first to make a decision about Daddy’s life support.
