Summary

In Chapters 25 and 26 the reader finally learns of the events that Everhart has foreshadowed. In Chapter 25 Mama starts to ask questions about whether the children could see themselves living in New Hampshire full time, justifying Dixie’s earlier concerns and making her homesick. One night after one of these questions, Dixie has a dream that she is back in the swimming hole with colors swirling and all of a sudden she notices the black water she is swimming in start to churn with a large fish coming towards her to eat her. She wakes up realizing she had only had a nightmare, but lies awake for a few hours afterwards.

The next morning she goes downstairs to breakfast and overhears her mother and Granny Ham talking about something serious. She stops and overhears them discussing Ms. Suggs and how Granny Ham thinks Mama...
